Leopold Mozart and his contemporaries
In line with the tradition of the topic-focused festival, the 2012 Mozart Festival will be dedicated to the personality of Leopold Mozart. On occasion of his 225th day of death, not only his musical heritage will be featured with numerous performances by internationally renowned top-class ensembles. In addition, a comprehensive supporting programme will explore his role as a teacher and mentor to young Wolfgang Amadé. The question how responsible we are for young talents today, in the sense of education policy as well as in a cultural way, is also to be discussed.
For the first time, the programme of the festival will present a great number of moderated concerts, rehearsals, which are open to the public, and workshops for people of different ages, who will follow the "ways to classical music", together with established artists.
The festival will be opened with a concert by the Bavarian Chamber Philharmonic. The highlight of the programme will be the world premiere of a violin concert dedicated to Leopold Mozart. The repertoire from early classical times with works by Cannabich, Albrechtsberger, Wagenseil, Stamitz, Tartini and many more will be presented by a well-known ensemble specialised in authentic sounds. Leopold Mozart’s church music belongs to the top of what he has composed. That is why his “Missa Solemnis” will also be part of the programme interpreted by a magnificent cast. The festival will come to an end with a big family concert and a modern adaption of Leopold Mozart’s famous children symphony.
At the same time, Augsburg will host the House Concert Competition "Heimspiel – Home pit(ch)"
for the first time. Amateur ensembles from all parts of Europe and in different instrumentations are invited to present their chamber music repertoire.
